Film studio Lionsgate has snagged distribution rights to a biopic based on the life and work of Michael Jackson, it was announced yesterday (Feb. 7).

The as-yet unproduced feature, to be titled Michael, will be written by John Logan (whose credits include Gladiator, the Oscar-nominated The Aviator and Skyfall) and produced by John King (producer of the blockbuster Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody) as well as John Branca and John McClain, executors of the late performer's estate. (Their participation, of course, guarantees the use of his music in the film.)

A press release promises "an in-depth portrayal of the complicated man who became the King of Pop. It will bring to life Jackson’s most iconic performances as it gives an informed insight into the entertainer’s artistic process and personal life.”

Michael will be the second biography of Jackson to be produced in 2022. A Broadway musical, MJ, recently left the preview stage and is now playing in New York after a myriad of delays.
