It was in March 1987 when freestyle girl group Exposé released their debut album, Exposure. The album was chock full of hits, and would be certified double platinum in 1990. The album's fifth and final single, "Seasons Change," would be released in November 1987.
While Exposé was known for upbeat dance tracks, they'd also had success with slower tempos. The sultry "Let Me Be the One" had been their third top 10 hit in the US, so going full ballad with the brokenhearted "Seasons Change" seemed like a strong bet.
The gamble would pay off when "Seasons Change" would climb the entirety of the Hot 100 to peak at #1 the week of February 20, 1988.
"It was exciting, but at the same time we didn’t really know what we were in for," Exposé member Gioia Bruno said last year. "We kind of thought it was a passing phase type of thing. I didn’t even know what dance music was at the time, I was more the R&B singer. (Band mate) Jeanette Jurado knew because she was singing in a group prior."
"Seasons Change" would only hold the top spot for a single week. The song would be dethroned the following week by George Michael's "Father Figure."
