The world barely had time to catch its breath from the groundbreaking and wildly popular Purple Rain campaign when Prince and the Revolution released the followup LP, Around the World in a Day. The tour in support of the album and movie had just wrapped up on April 7, 1985, at Miami's Orange Bowl (dubbed the "Purple Bowl" for the occasion) when ATWIAD hit record stores on April 22, 1985.

After the album's first single, "Raspberry Beret," peaked at #3 on the Hot 100, Prince and the Revolution released the second single, "Pop Life," on July 10, 1985. The tune percolated on the charts for weeks, finally peaking at #7 for the week of September 21, 1985. The #1 song in America that week: Dire Straits' "Money for Nothing." The achievement marked Prince's eighth top 10 hit in a two-year span.
